A MOUNTAIN HOUSE ~
PURE ARTISANAL SYRUPS MADE ON THE WEST COAST
After moving to our 10-acre mountain side property in Abbotsford, British Columbia, we wondered what we could do with our beautiful forest of Cedars, Big Leaf and Rocky Mountain Maples, and Paper Birch Trees. Previously being a personal chef and since all roads lead to food, it didn’t take me long to figure out that the Maples would produce syrup that rivals anything made in Quebec and the Birch would also produce a unique syrup sought after by chefs and gourmets alike.
CLEVERLY DONE BY GRAPHIC DESIGNER, COLTON FLORIS, our Mountain House logo is inspired by the Japanese kanji characters that symbolize “mountain” and “house”. Colton created a simple but striking logo for our enterprise!
A Sugar Shack or Sugar House is an unusual concept in B.C. Those who have lived out East understand that making your own Maple Syrup is often a time honoured tradition that generations of families work together on - a tradition that can be passed down and can change from back yard hobbyists to a full time enterprise. Either way - it’s serious business!
Systems have changed - from hanging rusty buckets under metal spouts hammered into trees, to elaborate tubing lines pressured with vacuuming systems to pull sap to the sugar shack.
Our Fraser Health approved Processing Facility (aka Sugar Shack), allows us to harvest, manufacture, bottle and sell syrups farmgate.
Does sapping hurt the tree?
I like the analogy of a person donating blood and the tree is now giving someone else something to live on!
